Gear!
May 11, 2014My first official blog post (if you don’t count the little intro blog haha). What better way to start than to take a peak into my camera bag!
Canon 60D : my second body so far - so much better than my T1i. I love the swivel-tilt screen it has, pretty for high/low angle liveview and perfect for video.
Canon 50mm f/1.4 : this is no doubt my most used and favourite lens. I just love the boken and swallow depth of field. I usually use this lens at f/2.0 - f/2.8 even though it opens up until f/1.4 - it starts to lose it’s sharpness after f/2.0. You’ll probably find this lens on my body a majority of the time.
Canon 17-40mm f/4 : this will have to be my second most used lens. I’ll use this when my 50mm is too tight, when I’m shooting a bigger group, want more in my frame, or for landscapes. Considering that it’s an L lens, it has a really nice build, and is weather sealed. For being one of the cheapest L lenses you can get, it’s tack sharp especially if you stop down closer to f/8.
Canon 70-200mm f/4 : when I need that extra reach, I’ll use this lens. I don’t really use this lens at much, as the other two, but it has it has seen some light. This is the cheapest L you can get - pretty good build quality but unfortunately no weather sealing.
Canon 580EX II : bought this online after my 430 died.. but, I’ve always wanted this flash and now I’ve got it. Mainly use this when there isn’t enough light where I’m shooting. I always try to bounce the light off the ceiling, or the built-in bounce card just to get the flash to give off a softer light. I’m not one for harsh lighting.
Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod + 804RC2 head : really nice solid, sturdy tripod+head. it’s not too, too heavy if you aren’t carrying it long distances. Mainly use this thing for long exposure, self portraits, or when I need my camera stationary.
Manfrotto 560B-1 monopod : haven’t really used this much for photos yet, more so for videos. but i love the fact that the quick release plate is the same as my tripod so i don’t have to change the plates every time.
SD Cards (x4) : I carry a bunch of these around with me all the time. The sizes vary from 1x 8gb, 2x 16gb, and 1x 32gb. I primarily use Sandisk but I couldn’t pass up on the Lexar 32gb deal at the time.
BlackRapid RS-4 strap : pretty good solid strap. i can have my 60D, 17-40, and 580 for a couple of hours at an event.
Kata 3N1-20 sling backpack (not pictured) : I’ve had this bag for a couple of years now, and it’s been holding out pretty well I must say. It has enough space to fit everything mentioned above minus the tripod and monopod.
Umbrella and Light Stand (not pictured). I don’t use this as often as the rest but I’ve used it for professional headshots, and makeshift photo booth (with wrapping paper as the background). Maybe, I’ll try to use this more often and experiment with it.
And that’s all gear I currently own and use (and a little bit more below)!
extra: In the future, I plan to go full frame and add a 35mm and 135mm. The 35mm will probably be from Sigma because of the performance at it’s price, and the good reviews it’s got since it’s release. And the 135mm will be from Canon. I’ve read that it’s razor-sharp, and I love the compression this lens brings.
